An event in Nicosia later this week will focus on the European Union’s reported plans to step up deportations of Afghan nationals and on Cyprus’ asylum policies.
According to organisers, the discussion will take place on Saturday 21 February at 12:30pm at Yalla Collective Space & Café and will last approximately three and a half hours. The event is organised by IWW – Cyprus and is open to the public.
The organisers say the European Union is exploring the mass deportation of Afghans to Taliban-controlled Afghanistan under pressure from several member states, including Cyprus. Cyprus has been rejecting asylum applications on a large scale for more than half a year.
A refugee and member of the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW), described by organisers as having had his asylum application rejected, will speak at the event. He is expected to present on the history of Afghanistan and its current socio-political and economic situation, drawing on his personal experiences.
The organisers add that the presentation will also include local Afghan food.
