In November, he spoke about his deteriorating condition, saying he “could hardly walk across a room”.
The director received three Academy Award nominations for best director for Blue Velvet, The Elephant Man, and Mulholland Drive, and was awarded an honorary Oscar in 2019.
His film Wild at Heart won the Palme d’Or at Cannes in 1990.Beyond filmmaking, Lynch established the David Lynch Foundation for Consciousness-Based Education and World Peace in 2005, created paintings, released music albums, and maintained a popular YouTube weather report. His last major project was the 2017 revival of Twin Peaks.
Lynch began his career as an art student making experimental films before achieving cult success with Eraserhead.
He went on to direct mainstream successes while maintaining his distinctive surrealist style.
