The works of a couple with parallel careers in art are being presented from 12 December at Apokalypsi Gallery in the exhibition “Parallel Visual Searches”.
Marios and Anna Varella are joining their artistic forces in a major joint painting exhibition, with each leaving their own personal mark on the space.
Varelas treats the female figure mainly within a surrealist environment. His forms follow a personal idiom with slender figures, sharp features, bright, distinctive hair and collage work using fabrics that replace colour in many cases.
His works are narrative stories that draw their sources from daily life, nature and interpersonal relationships. These elements in the art of both artists form the common reference point for the launch of their images. The only difference is the different philosophy in approach and execution. Two different worlds apply their brushstrokes and technique to create images with personal identity and character.
Anna Varella focuses mainly on spiritual uplift, joy and people’s happiness—on emotion. She deals with love, the joy of indulgence in a sweet, relaxing in a café or a walk in a verdant park, naturally and always with beloved pets.
The world Anna has created is paradisiacal, romantic, idealistic and full of lyricism. It ignores the rules of today’s lifestyle and goes against the choices of glossy fashion magazines and frantic life rhythms.

Anna Varella has become known for her painting’s particular personal style. It represents her personal worldview whilst projecting genuine emotions. Bright and optimistic painting is the real world of visual artist Anna Varella.
The rosy, well-fed protagonists of her works seem to belong to another era. The retro mood evident in their clothing and behaviour is accompanied by abundant humour.
Both studied at Moscow’s Stroganov Academy of Applied Arts. Since then, both have worked in art and have organised many solo exhibitions and participated in many exhibitions in Cyprus and abroad.
