Liverpool star Diogo Jota, 28, has died in a car crash, according to Spanish media reports.
Marca first reported the news on Thursday morning.
According to Marca, the collision occurred in the city of Zamora, Spain. The Liverpool player died when the vehicle in which he was travelling with his brother André, aged 26 and also a professional footballer for Penafiel, suffered a road departure that triggered a fire.
Witnesses who alerted emergency services said the car was engulfed in flames, which also spread to nearby vegetation.
Jota joined Liverpool in 2020 from Wolves for 44.7 million euros. An avid finisher, he played 182 matches for the ‘Reds,’ scoring 65 goals and providing 26 assists.
During that time he won three titles with the ‘Reds’: one Premier League (2024-25), one FA Cup (2021-22) and one League Cup (2021-22).
The Portuguese forward started his professional career in Paços de Ferreira in 2014, and also had stints in Porto and Atletico Madrid before moving to England.
Jota represented Portugal at senior level, earning caps in major tournaments including the 2022 World Cup and European Championships in 2020 and 2024. He was part of Portugal’s UEFA Nations League-winning squads in 2019 and 2025.
