Up to tens of thousands of visitors are expected to travel to Limassol for the FIBA EuroBasket 2025 group stage, with organisers predicting significant economic and developmental benefits from hosting Europe’s premier basketball tournament in Cyprus.
The event will be held at the Spyros Kyprianou Athletic Centre from August 28 to September 4, 2025, featuring six national teams competing in the group stage.
Organisers anticipate that the massive influx of basketball fans will generate revenue exceeding seven figures, primarily benefiting local hospitality businesses while enhancing Limassol’s tourism profile.
“The tournament’s international reach offers indirect benefits, strengthening Cyprus’s reputation as a country capable of hosting large-scale sporting events,” a Cyprus Basketball Federation announcement stated.
The previous EuroBasket tournament in 2022, hosted by Germany, Italy, Czech Republic and Georgia, reached a global audience of over 300 million viewers, highlighting the event’s significant reach and marketing potential.
The Deputy Ministry of Tourism and Limassol Municipality are serving as the main institutional sponsors of the Cypriot co-hosting arrangement.
Officials have emphasised the importance of the recently completed renovations to the Spyros Kyprianou venue, with the investment from the Cypriot government extending the centre’s operational lifespan by at least two decades, making it attractive for future international competitions.
For the Cyprus national basketball team, the tournament represents a valuable opportunity to gain experience competing against top European and world-class players in front of a home crowd.
