No infrastructure. No rules for how these scooters should even move on Cypriot roads. And yet someone waved them through, and now the streets are choking with the things, hired out by every outfit that fancied a slice of the action. So here’s the question the people in charge need to answer: why did you let these scooters flood every town in the country before you’d worked out how to manage them? Why are we only now scrambling to catch up with a mess we created ourselves?
Why did the legislation just sit there, gutted? Nobody bothered to draft the regulations it needed. Nobody bothered to approve them either. If a scooter smashes into someone, who picks up the pieces? And who, exactly, is keeping an eye on the scooter riders tearing along pavements, on Makarios Avenue in Nicosia, for instance, one wrong move away from mowing down a pedestrian?
