Turkey’s dangerous escalation of tensions

Relevant News

Turkey is deliberately stoking tension across the Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean, Cyprus included. This is a strategic choice, and we should never lose sight of that. The Turks are pushing their luck, stretching the rope and risking it snapping — with all that would entail.

Occupying Turkey is a pillar of regional destabilisation. It is a state that feeds on tension and harbours permanent expansionist designs against its neighbours. Cyprus and Greece are perpetually in its crosshairs.

This is a strategy tied to the broader geopolitical shifts across the region. Turkey’s Defence Minister, Yasar Guler, made that plain in a recent speech, declaring that his country’s rights and interests in the Aegean, the Eastern Mediterranean and Cyprus rest on “historical, legal and legitimate foundations.” He then delivered a pointed threat to specific audiences, warning that the Turkish Armed Forces — with what he described as their high operational capability, modern weapons systems, strong personnel structure and battlefield experience — possess both the power and the determination to neutralise any threat to Turkey.

The threat is unmistakable. But one has to ask: who exactly is threatening Turkey? Cyprus? Greece?

The Turkish Cypriots, too, are fed into this equation of Turkish absurdity. Ankara trots out the familiar narrative that Turkey is protecting the Turkish Cypriots and will, as a guarantor power, safeguard their rights. It won’t. What the occupying power is actually doing is using the Turkish Cypriots as instruments to serve Turkey’s own strategic and geopolitical interests in the region.

The message from the Turkish official is clear enough: Turkey will use force to block any arrangement that doesn’t serve or include it. The occupying power intends to have a role, a say, and control — or it will act accordingly.

Everything Guler said is simply a restatement of what every Ankara regime official repeats. And what Turkish officials keep repeating is, unmistakably, the expression of a revisionism that underpins the entire Turkish strategic posture.

These public declarations are the continuation of a deliberate escalation. One need only recall the “Blue Homeland” bill, expected to be tabled in the Grand National Assembly to formally delineate maritime zones. At the same time, violations are on the rise.
