If only there were a Police for Common Sense

When this retail tradition first arrived in our part of the world, we viewed it with interest and curiosity. As time passed, we began paying less attention to it, realising that, as with everything else, we had tailored and trimmed this institution to suit our convenience, stripping it of its essence.

Now, however, the situation has become particularly farcical and irritating for those who refuse to let everything slide and won’t stand being taken for fools.

I’m talking about the infamous Black Friday, which in Cyprus ought to be renamed Black Humour. We’re seeing ridiculous offers like knocking €20 off the price or 10% off selected items, absurd advertisements that wouldn’t convince even an eight-year-old, and generally a business community that seems completely oblivious to what Black Friday discounts actually look like in the markets where the tradition originated.

In Paphos, there’s even a department store that’s put up enormous promotional banners advertising products reduced from €49 to… €44! And they didn’t spare any expense on producing these banners.

For heaven’s sake, we need a Common Sense Police to round them up.
