I asked ChatGPT about the dangers of AI

Since humans, as imperfect beings, have obsessions, weaknesses, passions, and neuroses—essentially limitations—I thought I’d log onto ChatGPT for a chat.

I asked it to lay out, “honestly and without beating around the bush,” the objective risks that arise from the advancement and development of artificial intelligence (AI). It didn’t hide the darker sides. So, I decided to share these with you, in case you’re disinclined to have such a conversation with an inanimate machine.

To begin with, there is the risk of widespread job losses, especially in professions where tasks can be automated. This could lead to increased inequality and new forms of exploitation and division between social classes. The situation may worsen if the major companies developing AI monopolise control of the technology, thereby increasing their wealth and influence.

At the same time, if AI’s vast ability to collect, analyse, and process data is exploited by companies and governments, it could lead to severe privacy violations and the development of new, sophisticated methods of suppression. Additionally, AI can be used in the creation of more advanced weaponry.

The tool itself acknowledges how easily it can create and spread misinformation in the form of fake news, deepfakes, and bots, which could influence public discourse and undermine democracy. AI can also be used maliciously, to bolster cyberattacks. Algorithms could be “trained” to identify vulnerabilities, making digital infrastructures more exposed to risks. The issue becomes even more serious with the potential loss of control and autonomy over decisions in critical areas—in essence, our ability to control our own fate. By taking on tasks that require ethical decision-making, AI might weaken human judgment and responsibility.

And that’s just the “lighter” side. Let’s move on to the serious concerns. One extreme but real existential risk is the possibility that a superintelligent AI could emerge—an AI that surpasses human cognitive abilities and acts independently. If AI becomes autonomous, it might decide that human goals and values are insignificant or even dangerous to its own survival. With the rapid pace of technological advancement, how distant is this scenario, which resembles a dystopian science fiction story?

ChatGPT explained to me that concerns about the so-called “Artificial General Intelligence” (AGI)—which, theoretically, would have the capability to exceed human intelligence—are not without basis. It could develop its own priorities, potentially at odds with human interests. Some scientists estimate that this superintelligent AI is still far off, as there are significant technical and theoretical hurdles. Predictions range from 10 to 100 years, although some believe it may never happen.

Nevertheless, many estimate that the use of deep learning models and the increase in computational resources could lead to the creation of a powerful AGI within the next few decades. Others think the leap to AGI is bigger than we imagine, while some argue that superintelligence isn’t feasible due to natural limits. However, if AI develops the ability to self-improve, it could evolve much faster than we can control it. And imagine if a country or organisation develops AGI before its consequences are fully understood! The possibility is not negligible. After all, history teaches us that trusting humanity to prioritise values over power is not always wise.

The AI tool also pointed out that just because this technology is evolving doesn’t mean we should accept every development uncritically. We need to be vigilant and establish regulatory frameworks that ensure its use is ethical, transparent, and safe. More resources should be invested in research on how to ensure AI aligns with ethical values. This includes developing safe algorithms and exploring ways to control these systems. It highlighted that prevention is crucial, and we must consider potential scenarios now to develop strategies for managing them.

What is clear is that the coming decades will be pivotal. The rapid growth of AI presents enormous opportunities but equally significant risks.

If we don’t act promptly and systematically, we might find ourselves facing scenarios that would have been unthinkable just a few decades ago.

The goal is to maintain control over the technology and direct it responsibly for the common good, without allowing human judgment and moral compass to wither away.
