The housing problem isn’t just a Cypriot issue, but a European-wide one. The European Investment Bank (EIB) has announced a new Europe-wide investment platform for affordable and sustainable housing, with simultaneous funding for the sector of €10 billion over the next two years.
The EIB estimates that an additional one million new homes are needed annually to meet housing needs across Europe. EIB President Nadia Calviño emphasised yesterday that “the ability to have a comfortable and warm home is a desire that unites every family and every community in Europe, but it is also the foundation of every productive economy.”
She added that all of the above require massive investments, with Ms Calviño expressing the EIB’s intention to mobilise both public and private investments for this issue. Cooperation among all stakeholders is therefore essential to solve a problem serious enough that future generations shouldn’t have to face its consequences.
