The assassination attempt on Donald Trump exposed alarming security gaps within one of the world’s most powerful and renowned secret services. A 20-year-old came dangerously close to assassinating a former President of the United States.
As soon as the bullets started flying towards Trump, questions arose about how such an incident could have occurred. Who was to blame? What went wrong? What measures were taken or neglected?
Simultaneously, attacks were launched against the female agents guarding the former president. The criticism has been nothing short of misogynistic filth. They were blamed for not acting swiftly enough and deemed unfit for the secret service. Accusations were made that they froze and failed to remain calm under pressure. Other complaints alleged that they were too petite, overweight, and incapable of handling their weapons effectively.
These are, of course, blatant examples of sexist attacks. Both men and women serve in secret service, and during the attempt, they all acted together. The tragedy is that many of the false claims against the women were based on misleading, edited videos and images circulated online by right-wing commentators, influencers, and trolls.
As more manipulated footage and photos surface, more people are quick to join in with their venomous accusations against the female agents. Conservative influencer Gunther Eagleman even went so far as to suggest that one female agent should quit and go back to making sandwiches at home.
We are not surprised by this sexist backlash. Despite the strides made towards establishing equality between men and women, we still have a long way to go.
Typically, those who react most strongly are those who benefited from the system without putting in the effort, enjoying privileges, power, and positions they didn’t necessarily earn. They believe everyone else is to blame for their perceived losses, failing to recognise their own shortcomings.
Why should women serve in secret service alongside men? It’s the fault of the ‘woke’ culture, obsessed with flattening the hierarchy and erasing alleged workplace inequalities between the sexes. Why should men and women be paid the same? After all, men are biologically predisposed to take more risks and therefore deserve higher pay.
It will take time before we stop hearing, ‘Go back to the kitchen and make a sandwich.’ Sexist attitudes are deeply ingrained in our culture and won’t disappear overnight.
