Corruption undermines democracy

IN a society that has been dealing with corruption and collusion for a long time, announcements and grandiloquent words have no meaning. It is important to have a continuous evaluation of the management that is carried out to deal with these phenomena. Obviously, there must be a goal and the primary goal is to significantly limit them.

SURELY someone will claim that all this is not being mentioned now, but has been for many years. And that despite the announcements, these phenomena have not disappeared. They have not disappeared, despite the fact that we must recognise that there is improvement. There are more safety valves today than in the past. But the problem remains.

IN the recent period we have been watching a ‘theater of the absurd’. Public opinion is bombarded by various stories that are not confirmed. But that is not the issue. The issue is that through the telling of various stories, fairy tales, a portion of society adopts a tendency towards leveling and complete denial. Society needs solutions to small or large problems and not complete denial of everything.

Setting up ‘public courts’ is nothing new. Unfortunately, sometimes hatred is expressed through social networks. We are witnessing cannibalism. And this is obviously not being expressed for the first time. These behaviors are dead-end and toxic.

THERE IS a general acceptance that people who serve institutions did not respond or do not respond to their mission. They did not rise to the occasion. Some people were discredited by their attitude. And through the discrediting of people, institutions are also discredited, unfortunately. Sometimes justified. Sometimes not.

BETWEEN complete discrediting and restoration of trust, there is a distance. Today, this distance seems great. However, it does not mean that trust cannot be restored. Upheavals and major changes will be needed. Both in people and approaches.

In order for problems to be faced and managed correctly and effectively, the appropriate conditions must also exist. This must be done in an environment that does not constantly emit toxicity. Especially when this climate is often not justified. Or there is no reason to create it.

THIS toxic climate, has nothing to do with the existence of disagreements. It has nothing to do with political confrontations, which are normal and must exist. Confrontations must only take place in the arena of democracy. A toxic climate and democratic functioning cannot coexist.
