A blessing or a curse?

Whether technology in our hands becomes a blessing or a curse depends on us, the people who use it. Often, the line between use and abuse is not very clear, leading to the blurring of right and wrong in our daily lives.

The recent decision by the Ministry of Education regarding the use of mobile phones by students in schools has sparked considerable debate. Following the intervention of the Commissioner, the issue has gained such momentum that it sometimes appears more like noise than serious dialogue. This is concerning given that the topic is so important and sensitive, relating to the education and development of our children.

Technology and, more broadly, progress are evolving so rapidly that it can be dizzying to fully grasp, understand, and apply them. Particularly regarding their use by children in schools, immense caution is needed.

Justifiably, the Ministry rushed to impose restrictions on the uncontrolled use of mobile phones by children in schools. They did this with justification, based on recent international studies and research.

Even in countries where educational policies are seen as exemplary due to their results, there has been a temptation to rethink practices related to students’ use of technology, especially mobile phones.

This is because they were forced to delve into the deeper aspects of the issue and identify significant risks. These include the inadequate development of critical thinking and the impact on children’s mental health and overall psychological makeup.

A recent international study personally alarmed me, linking high rates of depression in children and young people to their entrapment in endless internet navigation.

There are, of course, some general principles. Technology will certainly remain a great blessing from God in the hands of humans as long as it does not negate their individuality and does not trap them in the gears of the impersonal. Otherwise, it becomes a curse that nullifies them. Ultimately, the use and utilization of technology in life is primarily a matter of education.
