In a global landscape mired in political hypocrisy, powerful agendas and headlines driven by economic interests, the UN’s warning about the imminent threat of death to 14,000 infants in the Gaza Strip serves as a stark reminder of what truly deserves our attention: Life itself.
This becomes absolutely essential when considering the lives of thousands of innocent children dying helplessly from hunger, dehydration and neglect. The international community watches this geopolitical tragedy with awkward discomfort, almost indifferently. The words of UN Deputy Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, Tom Fletcher, were heart-rending: “There are 14,000 babies that will die in the next 48 hours unless we can reach them.” And the global response? Silence. Silence and just five lorries for an area with more than two million people.
Fletcher did not speak with diplomatic ambiguity. He asked for what should have been obvious: Gaza needs to be flooded with humanitarian aid. Infant formula, medicines, food, essential supplies. Instead, only five lorries managed to cross the border on Monday. After 11 weeks of blockade. And even these didn’t reach the starving communities.
Desperation requires no rhetorical flourishes. When we speak of 14,000 infants at risk of death within the next 48 hours, reason gives way to horror. There is no more time for consultations, diplomatic games or wishful thinking. There is only the shame of humanity watching the slow death of the most innocent souls without intervention.
And what of the world’s powerful? The United States and European Union? They hide behind bureaucratic structures and “balancing acts.” The US, in a continuous geopolitical power measurement with Iran, Syria, Ukraine and the Houthis, doesn’t dare or doesn’t want to challenge Netanyahu. The EU, once again, engages in rounds of empty declarations that aren’t accompanied by effective decisions. Words, interviews and carefully formulated concerns that save not a single child’s life.
But the UN itself is not free from responsibility. Warnings, however dramatic, are not enough. An organisation founded to prevent destruction and defend peace has become a mere observer. Aid missions are delayed. Access is obstructed. And the UN’s voice now sounds like a whisper amidst the cacophony of apathy.
Meanwhile, Israel continues its policy with a brutality and harshness that can no longer be justified. Netanyahu and his government bear full responsibility for the blockade. For civilian deaths. For the destruction of all forms of life in Gaza. There are no more pretexts about “self-defence” when the victims are thousands of children. There are no alibis for a policy that drowns an entire population in hunger and death.
When thousands of people—especially children—are dying, nothing else should concern humanity. However much the powerful try to convince us that there are more important issues. However much they persist in delaying aid. One truth remains: The lives of Gaza’s children are in their hands.
Humanity has reached rock bottom. Gaza is no longer simply a front line. It is a mirror. A mirror reflecting our collective failure to protect the most sacred good: Children’s lives. And as long as we remain silent, we are all complicit.
There is no longer room for distance, diplomatic balances, or hypocritical resolutions. The horror being caused at this moment by Israel under Netanyahu’s leadership has absolutely no justification. It is inhuman. It is criminal. It is unforgivable. History will record in dark letters these deeds and those who commit them. And those who tolerate them.
This is not the time for analysis. It is time for outcry. For demanding action. For Gaza’s children. For the very soul of humanity. Which, at some point, we must decide to save…
