The government is getting ready to cap the price for bottled water which is an essential commodity and should be within a consumer’s reach, Philenews reported on Friday.
Citing insiders, the report added that this is an additional measure aiming to support consumers that will address negative economic conditions affecting consumer interests.
It starts with bottled water but caps will be put on other products in the near future, according to the Consumer Protection Agency which has drafted a bill to be put out for public consultation.
In particular, a cap will be imposed on bottled water in 500 ml packs, bottled water in 750 ml packs.
The maximum price for water will apply at the following points of sale: Airports, ports, sports grounds – that is stadiums – and remote beaches, theatres, cinemas, archaeological sites and museums.
The bill also provides that a cap will be imposed on water prices in cases where consumers are self-serving. That is, they buy water from a shop without sitting in the catering area waiting to be served.
