We will never back down from our fight, the Presidency declared, underlining a historic debt to achieve the reunification of Cyprus for future generations.
‘Today marks 52 years since the 2nd phase of the barbaric Turkish invasion, which violently divided our country, making thousands of our relatives refugees and tragically forging the modern history and future of Cyprus’, the Presidency said in a statement on X.
Outlining the events of that time, the government notes that in violation of the ceasefire, Turkish forces seized Famagusta and Morphou, completing their design to create the Attila line.
‘We honour the fallen, the missing, refugees and the enclaved, as well as every citizen and family which bear the scars of war to this day’, it added, underlining its debt to those who fought and died so we can be free.
‘Their sacrifice will be vindicated when our country and people are finally freed from occupation’, it further noted.
The Republic of Cyprus, the government says, is seeking the obvious, what every human being and people of Cyprus deserve, including Greek and Turkish Cypriots, Maronites, Armenians and Latins.
Turkey’s continued crime can never be forgiven or covered up, foreign minister Constandinos Combos said, adding that ‘Famagusta, Morphou, the displaced, the fallen and our missing, will never allow us to forget’, he stressed.
‘The fight goes on’, he said.
