The Cyprus Nurses and Midwives Association (PASYNM) has called on Auditor General Andreas Papaconstantinou to substantiate allegations made against two nurses accused of workplace fraud at a state hospital.
The demand follows Papaconstantinou’s statements during a Parliamentary Control Committee session on January 16, where he discussed an audit report on the State Health Services Organisation’s Central Administration.
According to the union, the auditor general alleged that two nurses were “deceiving the organisation” by covering for each other’s unauthorised absences while maintaining secondary employment and receiving full pay from their hospital positions.
The union stated that when the State Health Services Organisation discovered the misconduct, the nurses reportedly only received a penalty of two salary increment suspensions, which Papaconstantinou characterised as indicative of a lax organisational culture incompatible with the institution’s scope and financial sustainability goals.
PASYNM has requested Papaconstantinou to either provide documented evidence and file a formal complaint to their disciplinary council or issue a public apology to the nurses and their professional association.
The union expressed concern that such allegations, if unsubstantiated, unfairly stigmatise the nursing profession and create misleading impressions about unethical conduct specifically among state hospital nurses.
