Police arrested two men in Famagusta district on Wednesday night on suspicion of rape in two separate cases.
In the first case, a woman filed a complaint on May 18. Police obtained an arrest warrant and detained a suspect on Wednesday evening.
In the second case, a 20-year-old tourist reported on May 19 that she had been raped by an unknown man on May 16. Investigators identified a 23-year-old suspect and arrested him, also on Wednesday night.
The arrests came during a wider overnight policing operation across Cyprus, in which officers conducted organised patrols at key points in urban areas. Seven people were arrested on various offences including rape, unlawful possession of property, causing a disturbance and being drunk in a public place, assault on a police officer, illegal residence, and drink-driving.
During the operation, police stopped 517 vehicles and checked 726 occupants. Officers also carried out 35 premises inspections, which produced two complaints.
Traffic checks resulted in 352 citations for various violations and 18 cases under further investigation, with 12 vehicles impounded. Of the traffic citations, 85 were for speeding. Police conducted 100 drink-drive checks, resulting in two citations.
Police said operations to prevent and suppress crime continue daily, with enhanced police presence, targeted checks, and immediate operational action.
