The number of motorists paying traffic camera fines has increased fivefold after police announced they would begin court proceedings for unpaid penalties from March 31, 2025.
Daily online payments through the police website have jumped from around 1,000 to approximately 5,000 since last Thursday, sources told philenews, suggesting many drivers had been deliberately avoiding payment of known violations.
The surge in payments has put strain on the system. Currently, more than 250,000 unserved notices are pending, with numbers growing daily from violations captured by over 100 operational cameras across the island.
Police are preparing to implement a “photo radar list” at airports, ports, and checkpoints by February, pending data protection approvals.
The measure will allow officers to serve outstanding fines to passengers before they board flights, including approximately 25,000 violations involving Turkish Cypriot drivers.
While legal discussions continue regarding the 12-month statute of limitations for such offences, the Attorney General’s office has approved criminal proceedings against those who received but ignored violation notices.
The police have provided an online platform for citizens to check for outstanding fines, acknowledging that some notices may have been sent to incorrect addresses.
