Three officers involved in the Potamia fatal shooting incident earlier this week, were called in for questioning today by the Nicosia CID, with a service weapon bullet confirmed yesterday as being a young Pakistani immigrant’s cause of death, reclassifying the case to homicide.
The officers were providing assistance to an anti-Poaching Unit, involved in an operation in close proximity to the buffer zone and used their weapons in an attempt to stop three vehicles carrying passengers allegedly involved in illegal immigrant trafficking.
The three MMAD (Special Anti-Terrorist Squad) members will provide what is known as investigative statements, which essentially means they are being considered as suspects, until the facts of the case are clarified.
Authorities hope that their responses will provide answers as to what went wrong, given that the initial police report referred to shots being fired at the vehicles’ tyres, after one of the drivers rammed the police patrol.
Philenews sources note that a second service vehicle was in the area, but this has yet to be established in the on-going investigation.
The fundamental question that has also being pressed strongly in media reports is how the body of the 24 year old Pakistani man was found in the Nicosia suburb of Acropolis, a distance of almost thirty kilometres from the scene.
It is considered impossible that he managed to travel there in his condition, so it’s most likely that he was transported and abandoned there.
Beyond the acknowledgement that a service weapon killed the man, authorities have not disclosed anything of significance about the case, indicating that the circumstances of the incident remain unclarified.
The service weapon bullet was found lodged in the victim’s back.
