Health officials in Cyprus are urging caution as a heatwave grips the island.

Several cases of heat exhaustion have been reported, with three elderly patients currently hospitalised for heatstroke in serious condition.

State Healthcare Services Organisation (SHSO) spokesperson Charalambos Charilaou confirmed the hospitalisations and said affected individuals were receiving appropriate care.

Separately, Dr. Avraam Elia, Director of the Pediatric Department at Makarios Hospital, highlighted the potential health risks for children during heatwaves, particularly those in classrooms without air conditioning.

“Heat exposure can lead to dehydration, discomfort, and symptoms like headache, abdominal pain, and fever in children,” he explained. “These are signs of heatstroke and can negatively impact their concentration and academic performance.”

He defined heatstroke as a medical emergency caused by prolonged sun exposure or exertion in extreme temperatures. “It primarily affects infants, the elderly, and those with underlying health conditions,” Elia added.

Symptoms of heatstroke include muscle cramps, dizziness, confusion, headache, nausea, vomiting, and potentially progressing to delirium, seizures, and loss of consciousness. Skin becomes hot, red, and dry, with fever and rapid or irregular breathing.

“Severe cases can lead to organ failure and even death,” Elia warned.

Preventive measures include staying hydrated, consuming fruits and vegetables, limiting sugary drinks, avoiding sun exposure, wearing light clothing, and using hats. If heatstroke is suspected, moving the person to a cool area, removing tight clothing, applying cool compresses, and providing fluids (if conscious) are recommended before seeking immediate medical attention.

Elia stressed the heightened vulnerability of children due to their body composition and urged parents to prioritise hydration, limit sun exposure, and seek medical help if any signs of heatstroke appear.

Last week, two people died after displaying heatstroke symptoms in Nicosia.
