Third case of bacterial meningitis reported in Cyprus as teenager admitted to intensive care

A 17-year-old with severe symptoms has become the third case of bacterial meningitis reported in Cyprus.

The teenager is currently receiving treatment in an intensive care unit. Following the diagnosis, the Ministry of Health activated established protocols, with individuals from the patient’s immediate environment receiving necessary prophylactic medication.

This latest incident follows two separate cases reported last week – a high school student from Limassol and an infant from Paphos. The student was admitted to the intensive care unit of a private hospital, while the infant was transferred to Makarios Hospital for specialised care.

“This particular case, like the previous two, is not connected,” said Dr Elisabeth Constantinou, Director of Medical Services. “Currently, the number of meningitis cases we are experiencing remains within expected parameters, as we typically see isolated cases annually.”

Despite the reassurance that case numbers remain within normal ranges, health officials have initiated enhanced surveillance measures.

“We have already begun monitoring the situation closely,” Constantinou noted. “We will conduct our own checks and research, and we certainly remain vigilant.”
