The cost of managing migration in Cyprus will double in 2024

Relevant News

Spending on migration will be huge in 2024, due to increased needs from recent years’ flows for new structures, medical care, benefits, and general management of asylum seekers.

The amounts estimated to be spent in the new year are particularly high, as the construction of two structures and the many arrivals push the costs up to several million.

For the needs of the Ministry of Interior alone, the cost of immigration doubles in ’24 compared to 2023, due to the new structures being built that will provide relief solutions for both accommodation and detention until departure.

Migration will be a problem both for Cyprus and Europe for years to come.

According to figures from the Ministry of Interior, the expenditure of the Ministry of Interior, although not the total amount spent since many departments are involved, is nevertheless very high. In particular:

2021: €32,227,705 (actual expenditure)

2022: €42,953,245 (actual expenditure)

2023 (up to October): €54,175,521

2024: €103,528,953 (budgeted expenditure)

At the same time, according to the data provided by the Ministry of Finance, in 2024 these expenses are expected to be significantly increased since it is estimated that they will reach a total of 196,024,405 million euros.
