Recent tensions created between a Turkish naval presence and an Italian research vessel near Greece highlights ongoing tensions in the Eastern Mediterranean.
The Italian NextGeo company’s vessel, Ievoli Relume, was conducting surveys for a planned electricity cable connecting Greece, Cyprus, and Israel. Turkey deployed warships, claiming the research violated its continental shelf.
This incident indicates Turkey’s strategy of asserting influence over geostrategic energy projects in the region. Ankara seeks a role in such developments and may try to disrupt them if excluded.
Greece downplayed the incident, stating that the Italian vessel completed its work within the Greek Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and diplomatic channels functioned well.
The spokesperson confirmed Greece’s commitment to dialogue but emphasised it wouldn’t compromise on its sovereign rights.
The tensions highlight the complexity of energy development in the Eastern Mediterranean, where conflicting territorial claims and security concerns create friction.
