The Eastern Mediterranean region is set to experience heavy rainfall until Dec. 13, with precipitation levels expected to exceed seasonal averages significantly, the Department of Meteorology said Thursday.
The Bora weather system has already brought substantial rainfall to the region, according to alerts from the Cyprus Department of Meteorology and the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO).
Official data showed Cape Greco recorded the highest rainfall at 115.8 millimetres during Dec. 3-4, whilst Frenaros and Xylofagou registered 77.1 mm and 63.1 mm respectively. Other notable measurements included CYTA SAT Kakoratzia at 53.4 mm, Kornos at 43.2 mm, and Athienou at 42.0 mm.
Forecasts indicate an 80-90% chance of above-average rainfall in the first week of December across Cyprus, Greece, and Turkey, decreasing slightly to 60-70% in the second week. Total accumulation could reach between 50-150 mm, potentially surpassing 150 mm in mountainous areas.
Meteorological authorities have warned of increased flood and landslide risks, particularly in coastal regions and areas near river basins across the three countries. The Bora system earlier this week brought Cyprus’s mean daily rainfall to 29.3 mm during Dec. 3-4, accounting for 28% of the monthly average.
The current weather pattern stems from a low-pressure system interacting with moist air across the Eastern Mediterranean, aligning with climate models that suggest such systems may become more frequent in the region.
