Severe storm causes widespread damage in Kourion municipality

Relevant News

A severe storm has wreaked havoc across the Kourion Municipality, uprooting trees, displacing metal roofing, and downing electrical wires, resulting in flooded streets as of 6:30 PM local time.

In an interview with Philenews, Mayor Pantelis Georgiou reported that the intense storm initially hit the area, leading to significant disruptions. Communities affected include Ypsonas, Episkopi, Asomatos, Akrotiri, Erimi, Kolossi, Trachoni, and Kantou. “The situation is tragic. We have been heavily impacted,” the Mayor stated, emphasizing that municipal crews have been deployed since the onset of the storm to clear the roads.

Mayor Georgiou is personally overseeing the municipal teams as they tackle the chaotic conditions, where many trees have fallen, blocking access and complicating emergency responses. “Our priority is to ensure the safety of citizens and to restore normalcy as soon as possible,” he added.

The storm has also caused metal roofing materials to detach and scatter, with electrical wires cut and laying across roadways. Teams from the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) are currently on-site to address the electrical hazards.

Several roads have been deemed dangerous due to the storm’s aftermath. The Limassol-Asomatos road near the “KERYNEIA” establishment has been closed to traffic due to fallen trees, and drivers are advised to take the Limassol-Trachoni route instead.

Additionally, intense weather conditions have been reported in Paphos, where several roads are experiencing water accumulation and fallen trees. Drivers are warned to exercise caution on Grigoris Afxentiou, Grivas Digenis, Onoufrios Kliridis, Tombs of the Kings Avenue, and Mouttalos Square.

The Orokonda-Pedoulas-Kykkos-Kampou road is also dangerous due to rockslides and earthfalls, while on the Paphos to Limassol highway near the tunnel, metal objects (roofing) have been swept onto the roadway, further complicating the situation.
