Russian-Israeli citizen arrested in Larnaca on Interpol warrant over sea piracy

A 47-year-old Israeli citizen of Russian origin, Alexei Kartzgor, has been arrested pursuant to an international arrest warrant issued against him by Russia through Interpol, a police spokesperson told the Cyprus News Agency, confirming a report on the matter by Israeli newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth.

The 47-year-old wanted man was arrested on Saturday at Larnaca port and will appear before Larnaca District Court on Monday to advance the procedure for his extradition to Russian authorities, the Cyprus News Agency was told.

The report said Alexei Kartzgor was arrested to execute an international arrest warrant concerning “an old case of hijacking a cargo ship in the Baltic Sea”.

According to Yedioth Ahronoth, Kartzgor arrived in Cyprus by ship and was unaware that a pending international arrest warrant had been issued by Russia through Interpol “for participation in planning and executing the hijacking of the ship Arctic Sea”.

The newspaper reports that Kartzgor had been arrested in the past for the case and, in 2009, was released on bail but fled.
