The Movement of Ecologists – Citizens’ Cooperation has raised serious safety concerns about the historic Panagia Chrysospiliotissa cave site in Kato Deftera, warning of renewed geological instability that threatens both the monument and visitor safety.
The party cited a recent complaint letter from local authorities and the ecclesiastical committee reporting new signs of natural slope destabilisation above the cave, which poses risks to the site’s integrity and public safety.

The cave, designated as an Ancient Monument, is described as a unique carved temple of significant natural, religious and cultural value.
Local residents and authorities, with long-standing support from the Green Movement, had previously highlighted safety risks following a 2019 slope collapse that caused no injuries but confirmed the need for immediate intervention.

The environmental group is demanding immediate action from authorities, including the appointment of a competent authority to oversee legislation enforcement in the area and declaration of the area above the cave as a “White Zone” until completion of a geotechnical study.
The movement also called for immediate activation of relevant ministries and the Department of Antiquities to protect the cultural and natural heritage site.
The competent authorities must take responsibility, the party warned, stating that further negligence cannot be tolerated. The group emphasised that Panagia Chrysospiliotissa represents an integral part of local history and identity that must be preserved.
