In a statement released on Wednesday, the United Kingdom’s High Commission in Cyprus refuted claims Royal Air Force flights have transported weapons to the Israeli Defense Forces.
The announcement further states that, in conjunction with the first annual bilateral strategic dialogue between the United Kingdom and the Republic of Cyprus, the two parties will review all areas of their cooperation.
This includes ongoing efforts by the UK, alongside Cyprus and other international partners, to enhance stability and support humanitarian aid in the region.
The statement aims to clarify the position of the UK in response to recent speculations, emphasising the commitment to transparency and the shared objective of promoting stability and providing humanitarian assistance in the area.
A report by Declassified UK has claimed that the UK’s airbase in Akrotiri, Limassol, has facilitated over 30 military transport flights to Tel Aviv since the start of Israel’s bombardment of Gaza.
According to Israeli newspaper Haaretz, the airbase has seen more than 40 US transport aircraft, 20 British transport aircraft, and seven transport helicopters flying in with cargo from US and NATO depots.
Facing questions from British MPs, enquiring whether Akrotiri is being used to send arms or military equipment to Israel, UK Defence Minister Defence James Heappey refused to comment stating, “The Ministry of Defence does not comment on information about allies’ operations.”
Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides has also denied that Cyprus is being used as a base to supply Israel with military equipment.
