A 56-year-old European national serving a sentence at the Central Prisons was arrested early on Sunday, 26 July 2026, over the alleged burglary of a restaurant and theft of about €6,000.
The prisoner had been granted approved leave to visit his family in Paphos.
He was taken into custody following his arrest and is expected to appear before Paphos District Court on Sunday, where police will request a remand order while they investigate the case.
The 56-year-old is serving a six-year prison sentence for theft by an employee and money laundering.
After serving more than half of his sentence, he was admitted to the Guidance Centre for Extramural Employment and Rehabilitation of Prisoners.
His leave was granted as part of that programme and in accordance with prison regulations.
The Central Prisons have also immediately activated the procedures governing his participation in the programme and the conditions under which he is serving his sentence.
