Pilides, Konstantinou frontrunners in Disy for Nicosia mayoral race

Relevant News

Survey findings regarding the potential candidates for the 2024 municipal elections were presented to the Disy party leadership last Tuesday, providing an initial insight into the mayoral race. As per reports, Natasa Pilides and Andreas Konstantinou seem to hold an edge in Nicosia over Nikos Nouris, Charalambos Petrides, and Chrysanthos Fakas.

According to Phileleftheros, the Disy decision will factor in the survey results and potentially other emerging factors, such as Akel’s choice of candidate.

Recent overtures from Akel signal a search for a candidate beyond the spectre of the left, with the former deputy culture minister’s name Yiannis Toumazis emerging. However, according to Phileleftheros sources, Toumazis is set to reject Akel’s offer.

In Strovolos, there are talks of Disy cooperating with Diko. The Diko leadership seems inclined towards endorsing the current mayor, Andreas Papacharalambous, while Disy is leaning towards supporting Stavros Stavrinides, a Diko municipal councillor.

Larnaca

In Larnaca, the current mayor Andreas Vyras, poses a challenge for the prospect of a Disy-Diko cooperation, as he is a strong favourite for reelection.

Also, in Aradippou, Disy is set to support Christakis Partou’s candidacy.

Limassol, Paphos

Concerns loom over potential challenges in Limassol due to existing internal disagreements, Phileleftheros writes. Collaboration with other parties appears unlikely in Paphos as well.

In Limassol, Disy appears to endorse incumbent Nicos Nicolaides’ candidacy, a discussion that Diko seems to be sidestepping, according to Phileleftheros.

The municipal elections will take place on June 9, 2024.
