Cross-examination of a key prosecution witness concluded on Tuesday in the rape trial of suspended Paphos mayor Phedon Phedonos, as the number of people who have testified in the case reached 15, Philenews understands.

The witness is reported to have been connected, at the material time, to the complainant’s circle. Two more people were then called and testified as prosecution witnesses at the same hearing.

The case is due to resume on September 29 and October 6, when further prosecution witnesses are expected to be called as the prosecution continues presenting its case.

Phedonos, who has pleaded not guilty to all five charges, faces two counts of indecent assault along with rape, administering a substance to cause stupefaction with intent to commit a felony or misdemeanour, and assault causing actual bodily harm. The alleged offences date from 2014. The three most serious charges each carry a possible sentence of life imprisonment on conviction.

The trial opened on the merits on July 27 at Paphos Criminal Court, following three earlier procedural hearings, with proceedings held behind closed doors to protect the complainant.
