The Parliament on Thursday unanimously passed a bill reducing fixed fines for certain traffic light violations captured by photo-enforcement cameras.
The bill, proposed by DEPA MP Marinos Mousiouttas, introduces a tiered system for fines based on the severity of the offence. A fine of 85 euros will apply if a vehicle stops at a pedestrian crossing during a red light, down from the current 300 euros. The 300 euro fine remains for stopping beyond the crossing or moving into the intersection during a red light.
The existing 25 euro fine for not stopping before the waiting line at a traffic light remains unchanged.
The new system will be implemented after adjustments are made to the photo-enforcement system, with a date to be determined by the government.
Lawmakers supporting the change argued that the previous 300 euro fine was excessive for some violations.
Opposition parties raised concerns that the camera system prioritised revenue generation over road safety.
The government will present proposals for further improvements to the system.
