Firefighters have contained a wildfire that broke out near the Statos-Agios Fotios community in the Paphos district, with their swift response stopping it from spreading into the residential area.

The fire, first spotted by a Civil Defence patrol, burned around three hectares of wild vegetation, vineyards and acacia trees, and also damaged irrigation hoses.

Fire Service spokesman Andreas Kettis said four crewed Fire Service vehicles and five Forestry Department vehicles took part in the firefighting operation. Civil Defence and the Game and Fauna Service each contributed one fire vehicle, along with the volunteer groups Atlas and Blue Heart.

Six aircraft operated at various points during the operation. Two were already on patrol when the fire broke out, and a further four helicopters and planes were later called in.

A hired earth-moving vehicle and a water tanker were also brought in to help put out the fire.

Two firefighting helicopters and all ground crews remain at the scene, working to fully extinguish the fire.
