Paphos village fights quarry expansion amid ecological concerns

The village of Androlikou in Paphos faces potential extinction due to plans for a new quarry zone, sparking protests from residents and environmental groups.

The Movement of Ecologists – Citizens’ Cooperation issued a statement on Monday supporting local opposition to the proposed quarry expansion. Their concern follows a public tender announcement by the Mines Service for environmental and ecological impact assessments.

“The community of Androlikou has great ecological and archaeological value, and its natural resources should not be sacrificed for commercial purposes,” the party said in its statement.

The environmentalists argue that existing quarry operations have already caused “irreversible damage” to the area’s biodiversity and residents’ quality of life. They emphasise the need to consider alternative options and sustainable solutions that protect Androlikou’s environmental and cultural heritage.

The party highlighted the rights of Androlikou’s residents as legitimate landowners, insisting their opinions should be central to decision-making processes.

Calling for immediate environmental restoration, the Ecologists urged authorities to halt further quarry expansion plans and to “listen to the voice of the residents who are experiencing the consequences of 20 years of quarrying”.
