Paphos dam to be drained after repair attempts fail

Relevant News

The Mavrokolympos dam in Paphos will be completely drained within two days to allow repairs following unsuccessful attempts to fix a leak, Agriculture Ministry Director General Andreas Gregoriou said.

Alternative repair methods were considered but proved unfeasible due to the pipe’s structural characteristics, Gregoriou told reporters after the latest repair attempt failed yesterday.

The Water Development Department’s engineers and technicians have exhausted all options to contain and stop the leak, leading to the decision to drain the dam.

Specialist dam engineers were consulted on how to address the issue.

The drainage will result in the loss of 1.3 million cubic metres of water, a significant amount that normally supplies irrigation needs for the Pegeia and Kissonerga regions.
