DISY: Leaked video raises ‘serious suspicions’ of corruption centred on Presidential Palace

The conservative DISY party has called for an immediate investigation into all aspects of a leaked video showing alleged corruption centred on the Presidential Palace, saying “what’s revealed in the video is shocking and extremely serious”, whilst the government has failed to provide answers.

In a statement on Thursday, DISY said society is watching stunned and demands clear and convincing answers from the government, which “have not been given so far.”

Whilst acknowledging the video is very likely a malicious attack against the government, DISY said questions remain on what was revealed in the video.

The party listed a series of questions: Are cash contributions being received? Were contributions received in exchange for political or financial favours? Is this how the Social Support Body is used? Are contributions requested from the Presidential Palace? Is this how funders were approached? Were false or inaccurate information submitted to the Election Commissioner? What exactly was said by the protagonists?

DISY said the information raises serious suspicions of corruption, illegal activity and lack of transparency centred on the Presidential Palace, close associates of the president and members of his family.

The party said “the country can only be protected with full transparency, accountability and zero tolerance for corruption.”

DISY added that what was heard in the video makes urgent the need to reintroduce its own bill for the First Lady’s Fund and take even more drastic measures to ensure institutional accountability and transparency.

The video, published on 8 January on X, allegedly shows close associates of President Nikos Christodoulides guiding people posing as foreign businesspeople on how to bypass campaign financing laws. The government has dismissed the video as malicious and edited, with authorities investigating a case of a hybrid attack against the Republic of Cyprus.

Christodoulides was a member of DISY until 2023, when he broke ranks to run as an independent in the presidential elections. The party later decided to expel him.

Fact Check Cyprus has said that the video shows no signs of AI manipulation, but questions over its editing remain.
