A young person was rescued from the balcony of a burning flat in Latsia on Friday night after a fire broke out in a two-storey apartment building in Nicosia, the Fire Service said.

The fire broke out at around 8.50 pm in a flat in the Ayios Eleftherios housing estate, according to the Fire Service.

Fire Service spokesman Andreas Kettis said a young person was rescued from the balcony of the burning flat and handed over to an ambulance crew, which provided first aid at the scene.

An elderly resident of a neighbouring flat was also moved to a safe area with the help of bystanders before the Fire Service arrived.

A 36-year-old woman and her six-year-old child also live in the flat where the fire broke out, but they were not inside at the time.

The flat suffered extensive damage, while heat and smoke also damaged part of the apartment building’s exterior paintwork.

The scene was sealed off so examinations could be carried out on Saturday morning to determine the cause of the fire.
