Cypriot MEP Loucas Fourlas has been elected as the new Chair of the European Parliament’s Delegation to Serbia, marking a significant development in EU-Serbia relations.
The election of Fourlas, a member of the Democratic Rally party and the European People’s Party, comes at a crucial time as Serbia is currently in the process of EU accession negotiations and is considered to be at a more advanced stage compared to other candidate countries.
Fourlas was nominated by the European People’s Party and received support from all other political groups, resulting in his unopposed election to the position.
Upon assuming the chairmanship, Fourlas expressed gratitude to his fellow MEPs for their trust in his leadership of this important delegation.
“It is an honour to chair this delegation. Serbia faces both opportunities and challenges on its path to EU membership. I am at the disposal of all, joining forces with the Serbian Parliament to make the utmost progress on this accession journey,” Fourlas stated.
Following the election, Fourlas gave an interview to Serbian media outlets, outlining his plans and the framework within which he intends to operate.
The first meeting of the delegation under his chairmanship is scheduled to take place next month in Strasbourg.
Additionally, an official meeting between the European Parliament delegation and representatives from the Serbian Parliament is planned before the end of the year.
