Authorities in Germasogeia have been operating since the early morning hours to restore the damage caused by at least two tornadoes, Mayor Kyriakos Xydas said.
The ferocity of the storms has resulted in significant damage, with a reported case of an Israeli man undergoing surgery in Nicosia after suffering amputations to fingers on their right hand, according to police.
Mayor Xydas detailed the extensive damage inflicted on homes and infrastructure, pinpointing the origins of the tornadoes near the Apollonia hotel, extending north towards the Paniotis area.
The impact of the storm was such that trees and electricity poles were uprooted, greenhouses obliterated, windows shattered, and roof tiles dislodged, an event Xydas described as “unprecedented.”
The aftermath saw around 20 streets closed off during the night due to the hazards posed by the debris, including a notable incident where a crane at a construction site on Andokides Street toppled over.
The Paniotis Avenue remains inaccessible, with local authorities advising that the nearby school will remain closed for the day.
Efforts to restore normalcy and safety are underway, with municipal teams working closely with the Civil Defence, Police, Fire Service, and District Administration to aid the affected areas.
Mayor Xydas has also reached out to the Deputy Ministry of Social Welfare, seeking emergency accommodation for those displaced by the storms.
