A 23-year-old man accused of stabbing an 18-year-old at a Paralimni restaurant on 16 August has been ordered to undergo two months of compulsory psychiatric treatment after doctors deemed him unfit to follow court proceedings.

The 23-year-old is being treated at Athalassa Hospital after being examined by a psychiatrist following the issuing of an eight-day detention order on 17 August.

According to police sources, treating doctors determined he was not in a position to follow judicial proceedings, resulting in a new compulsory hospitalisation order for two months.

Today marks the expiry of the young man’s detention order, with further handling of the case to be decided based on his health progress.

The suspect had previously troubled police for thefts and burglaries and had been released from prison on 12 August, four days before the attempted murder.

The attempted murder was committed in front of restaurant patrons at 8:15pm on Saturday, 16 August.

Famagusta CID investigations revealed the 23-year-old had previously visited the restaurant to request money from a friend of his sister who works there.

The 18-year-old asked him to leave the premises, and after a short while, he returned and allegedly stabbed him.

The 18-year-old suffered a kidney injury, but his health condition is out of danger.

The suspect was found half an hour later walking in underwear in a Paralimni area.

He was initially arrested for the offences of causing alarm, common nuisance and breach of peace after he began shouting when police approached him. He was subsequently connected to the attempted murder and arrested for that offence.
