Lifeguards rescued two 18-year-old swimmers on Monday afternoon in the sea area opposite Limassol Zoo, after strong winds and currents swept them into deeper water.

According to a statement from the Limassol Lifeguard Unit, the incident occurred at 4:15pm in the LEM 0 lifeguard zone.

The two 18-year-olds were swimming in the supervised area when they tried to retrieve a ball that had drifted away. As they tried to reach it, strong winds and currents swept them into a sudden drop in depth, putting them at risk of drowning.

The two lifeguards on duty at the LEM 0 tower spotted the danger and rushed to the scene with a rescue board. One of them got both swimmers onto the board and began bringing them towards the shore.

Given the difficult conditions, the second lifeguard also joined the rescue, and the two of them managed to bring the young men safely to land.

After the rescue, both were found to be in good health, and neither needed to be taken to hospital or given further medical treatment.

The Limassol Lifeguard Unit is urging the public to follow lifeguards’ instructions and avoid trying to retrieve objects that drift away, particularly when strong winds and dangerous sea currents are present.
