Police asked the Nicosia District Court on Wednesday to remand six of the seven people arrested over the beating of a 16-year-old boy in Latsia for eight days. The beating was filmed, and the video spread widely online.
The suspects’ side reportedly claims that the 16-year-old had beaten a girl a few days earlier and that the suspects went to confront him about it. They also reportedly say there is a video recording of the alleged assault on the girl.
The hearing before Judge Stella Damianou was reportedly still under way behind closed doors, with the suspects’ parents and lawyers in the courtroom. It was interrupted for a few minutes when one of the minor suspects felt unwell and asked to leave the room.
Another suspect, aged 15, did not attend the hearing. He has reportedly been in hospital since Tuesday.
Those arrested are a 21-year-old, a 17-year-old, a 16-year-old, three 15-year-olds and a 14-year-old.
The 16-year-old who was beaten has reportedly been discharged from hospital but is in a very poor psychological state.
The attack under investigation took place shortly after 8pm on Friday, October 9, in Latsia. According to the evidence being examined, the seven suspects met the 16-year-old and allegedly attacked him. Medical examinations found a broken nose, as well as swelling and bruising to his face.
Phileleftheros previously reported that the boy was kicked while he was on the ground and attacked again when he managed to get up. Police have the video of the incident.
The 16-year-old gave a statement on Monday naming some of those involved. Others were identified from the video and from additional footage from nearby premises.
