Seven additional Larnaca schools will receive closed-circuit television surveillance systems after successful results from installations at Prodromos, Zenon and Livadia primary schools, which effectively reduced school vandalism incidents.
The Local School Board has announced a tender for the supply, installation and five-year maintenance of video surveillance systems at Livadia, Agios Georgios and Vergina lyceums, Vergina, Petrakis Kyprianou and Livadia gymnasiums, and Agii Anargiri Michali Kakogiannis Primary School.
The cost has been estimated at €113,400, with interested parties having until 19 August to submit their offers.
Encouraging results from pilot programme
“The programme’s implementation in three schools had encouraging results with reduced delinquency and vandalism,” Larnaca School Board President Gianna Nikolaou told Phileleftheros.
According to tender terms, cameras will be installed at main entrances and exits of school units, as well as at perimeter points to monitor potential access to school premises.
Privacy protections built in
The video surveillance system “will be activated during non-operational hours of school units (from the end of the school day until the start of the next), to limit interference with the privacy of school unit subjects (students, parents/guardians, educational and other staff).”
The expansion follows repeated school vandalism incidents that have long concerned the Education Ministry and local School Board, prompting the systematic installation of surveillance equipment across Larnaca’s educational facilities.
