An 80-year-old man died on Thursday after driving against traffic on a Larnaca highway and colliding head-on with a taxi, police said.
The incident occurred at around 11:15 a.m. on the stretch between the Rizoelia and Kalo Chorio roundabouts. The driver, identified as Anastasios Michaila, entered the wrong lane from the Rizoelia roundabout.
The private car driven by Michaila collided with a taxi travelling in the correct direction. The taxi was driven by a 32-year-old European citizen, a permanent resident of Nicosia.
Both men were taken by ambulance to Larnaca General Hospital, where doctors confirmed the death of the 80-year-old.
The taxi driver sustained serious injuries but his condition is not considered life-threatening, according to doctors.
Police continue to investigate the circumstances of the collision.
