Larnaca municipality has unveiled a comprehensive five-tier greening initiative that aims to plant thousands of trees and shrubs across Larnaca, Livadia, and Oroklini.

The programme includes the development of three major parks – Pattichio, Salina, and a recreational park in Dromolaxia. The completed Salina Park has already seen the planting of 232 trees and 1,105 shrubs across its 14,000-square-metre area.

Pattichio Park, scheduled for completion in 2025, will feature 593 trees and nearly 4,000 low-height plants across 16,000 square metres. The Tsiakkilero refugee settlement park will be enhanced with 185 trees and 750 shrubs across its 9,500-square-metre space.

The city centre will see approximately 300 trees and 300 shrubs planted during the renovation of Alki and Acropolis squares and the commercial centre, due for completion in two years. The Larnaca-Dhekelia road project will add 180 trees and 18,000 shrubs.

Municipal officials say Larnaca currently boasts 26.5 square metres of green space per resident, significantly exceeding the World Health Organization’s minimum requirement of 9 square metres.

The city aims to further increase this ratio through the creation or renovation of 19 neighbourhood parks with certified playgrounds and disabled access.

The initiative also includes a public engagement campaign called “+1 Tree”, encouraging residents to plant trees to mark personal milestones or achievements, as the municipality works towards creating a greener urban environment.
