Larnaca Municipality has installed 100 safety boxes at Mackenzie Beach to combat rising theft incidents targeting beachgoers’ personal belongings, with plans to expand the initiative to Finikoudes Beach within days.
The safety boxes have been positioned under beach umbrellas and are available for public use at a rental cost of €2.50 per day. The municipality announced the measure as part of broader infrastructure improvements aimed at enhancing visitor safety and security.
“The boxes have been placed on umbrellas and are available for public use, providing a secure storage space for personal items during beach visits,” stated Larnaca Municipality in its announcement.
The initiative follows increased reports of theft from beachgoers’ bags at busy coastal areas throughout the region. Municipality officials identified the security concerns as a priority requiring immediate intervention.
An additional 100 safety boxes will be installed at Finikoudes Beach in the coming days, extending the programme to cover the municipality’s most frequented coastal locations.
The safety box installation represents the first phase of a comprehensive beach infrastructure upgrade programme. Municipality officials emphasised the project’s focus on improving visitor experience through enhanced security measures and service quality improvements.
The boxes are designed to accommodate standard personal items including mobile phones, wallets, keys, and small valuables during swimming and beach activities. Usage instructions and rental procedures are displayed at each installation point.
Larnaca Municipality described the initiative as part of a wider strategy to upgrade the visitor experience at Larnaca beaches, with emphasis on security, comfort, and quality of services provided.
