Larnaca police met state and local agencies on Thursday to discuss measures for the Filanta complex near Larnaca port, which the Larnaca District Local Government Organisation (DLGO) recently declared dangerous.
On Wednesday, two people went to Larnaca district police headquarters and complained that they had bought flats at the complex only to find other people living in them illegally, Phileleftheros understands. They said the occupants appeared to have made agreements with others.
The complex, made up of five blocks of flats, was the scene of an operation by the Aliens and Immigration Unit on May 27, during which a foreign national died and two others were injured when they jumped from balconies to avoid arrest.
Larnaca police director Ioannis Kapnoulas confirmed that complaints about the complex were made on Wednesday and said they would be examined to establish whether any criminal offences had been committed. Police are also examining a third complaint about threats against the chairman of the complex’s management committee.
Kapnoulas told Phileleftheros that all the relevant services had been invited to the meeting so that their work on the complex could be coordinated, with the aim of examining every complaint.
“Each service’s role was examined and action at the site will be decided soon,” he said.
There are also plans to check the people living at the complex, he added, and the services may act at the same time in a joint operation.
Besides the police, the meeting was attended by the Deputy Ministry of Migration and International Protection, the Social Welfare Services, the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC), the Health Services, the DLGO and Larnaca Municipality. It looked at ending the serious illegal activity reported at the complex recently.
The complex’s management committee has alleged that a ring is stealing electricity and water and illegally subletting flats that belong to other people.
