Customs officers at Larnaca Airport found 48 vaping devices declared to contain THC and CBD hidden inside a package from the United States that had been declared as containing children’s toys.
The package was inspected on 5 August by Customs Department officers working at the Post Office Parcel Exchange at Larnaca Airport after it was selected by the Customs Risk Management System.
According to the declaration, the 4.2kg parcel contained three packages of children’s toys, specifically cards featuring a well-known cartoon brand.
During a physical inspection carried out in the presence of a postal officer, customs officials found the three packages. Instead of the declared children’s cards, however, they contained 48 flavoured vaping devices, with 16 devices in each package.
The devices were labelled as containing 89% tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), or 1,517.65mg per package, and 7.49% cannabidiol (CBD), or 3.21mg per package, with the declared total active cannabinoid content (TAC) amounting to 96.49%.
The Drug Law Enforcement Unit (YKAN) was immediately notified and officers went to the inspection site.
Customs seized the package and its contents before handing them over to YKAN.
Following the issue of a warrant, YKAN officers arrested a person in Nicosia district on Friday morning who is suspected of being the parcel’s recipient.
The case is being investigated by YKAN’s Nicosia unit.
