Minister of Labour Yiannis Panagiotou and his family have received threats and abuse over ongoing legal proceedings concerning sports clubs’ debts, the minister revealed today.

“Unfortunately, my family and I have received threats and abuse under the direction of a specific company’s management that owes huge sums to Social Insurance. This is indicative of the characteristics our society now possesses,” Panagiotou said during an appearance on Alpha TV.

The minister downplayed concerns about the threats, emphasising that his priority remains fulfilling his duties and protecting public interest. When asked about potential legal action regarding the messages, Panagiotou indicated he had not made any decisions on the matter.

Addressing criticism over his naming of a specific sports club, Panagiotou acknowledged the president’s remarks that such identification could have been avoided. “As the president pointed out yesterday, naming them specifically could have been avoided,” the minister said.

He explained that he had merely confirmed information that was already public knowledge when questioned by journalists. “At the time, when asked to confirm something that was already written in newspapers and known to the journalist and all of Cyprus, I considered confirmation a given, but it could have been avoided,” Panagiotou said.
